Waking Up With Bites Is Not Normal — Find the Cause First
Unexplained bites are one of the most common reasons Sydney residents call a pest controller. Two culprits cause the majority of these cases: bed bugs and fleas. Both are blood-feeding parasites, both are nocturnal, and both leave similar-looking marks. But the treatment for each is completely different — which is why correct identification matters. The Bite Pattern: Your First Clue
Bed bug bites typically appear in a line, cluster, or zigzag pattern — often called “breakfast, lunch, and dinner” bites. This happens because a single bed bug feeds, moves slightly, and feeds again. Common bite locations include the face, neck, arms, and hands — any skin exposed while sleeping.
Flea bites tend to appear in random clusters rather than lines. They are most commonly found around the ankles and lower legs, because fleas jump from floor level and target accessible skin. If you have pets, you may also notice them biting you anywhere on the body.
What the Bites Look Like
Bed bug bites: Small, red, slightly raised, and intensely itchy. They often develop a darker red spot in the centre. Some people have no visible reaction, making detection harder. Bites typically appear 1–3 days after the bite occurs.
Flea bites: Small, red, and itchy with a red halo around the bite site. They blister more readily than bed bug bites, and the itch is usually more immediate and intense. Flea bites can also cause a raised wheal (hive-like) reaction in sensitive individuals.
How to Inspect Your Bedroom for Bed Bugs
Bed bugs hide during the day and feed at night. Inspect these areas with a torch:
- Mattress seams and piping: Look for small brown or reddish insects (5mm long), shed skins, or black faecal dots that smear when wiped.
- Bed frame joints: Particularly in timber bed frames, bed bugs hide in cracks and joints.
- Behind headboards and bedside tables: Bed bugs travel up to 2 metres from the host.
- Behind power outlet covers and picture frames: Advanced infestations spread to wall fixtures.
- Sofa and upholstered furniture: Bed bugs are not exclusive to beds — any furniture used for resting can harbour them.
How to Check for Fleas
The “white sock test” is the simplest method: pull on white socks and walk slowly through carpeted areas of your home. Fleas will jump onto the white fabric and become visible as tiny dark brown specks. Also check your pet’s bedding and fur — use a fine-toothed flea comb through your pet’s coat over white paper and look for “flea dirt” (digested blood), which appears as small black specks that turn reddish-brown when wet.
Key Differences at a Glance
- Do you have pets? Fleas are the far more likely cause if there is a cat or dog in the home.
- Have you recently stayed somewhere new? Bed bugs are frequently picked up from hotels, hostels, Airbnb stays, or second-hand furniture.
- Where are the bites? Ankles and legs point to fleas; neck, arms, and hands point to bed bugs.
- What time of day do you notice the itch? Both tend to be worse at night, but flea bites in pet households often continue during the day.
Why You Should Not Delay Treatment
Bed bugs reproduce steadily — a population can double every 16 days under warm conditions. Fleas are even faster — a female can lay up to 50 eggs per day. Waiting two weeks while trying DIY sprays in a fully established infestation can allow a treatable problem to become a serious one.
Over-the-counter flea bombs and sprays rarely eliminate bed bugs, and many flea treatments fail because they only kill adults — not eggs. Professional treatment uses products that target multiple life stages, backed by an inspection to find every harborage point.
